Welcome to the setiathome@klx.com mailing list! This is is devoted to the discussion of the SETI@home project, where computer users can take part in the search for extraterrestrial intelligence by downloading a program that analyzes chunks of data when the computer would otherwise be idle. Join this list to discuss your experiences with the software, ways to optimize your system to increase the program's speed, troubleshooting, and other issues related to the software. Information about this list is online at: http://www.talkspace.net/mlists/setiathome.html *** Subscribing and Unsubscribing *** All commands to subscribe and unsubscribe should be sent to majordomo@klx.com. Don't send them to the list itself! To subscribe to the list, put this line in the message body (not subject): subscribe setiathome Likewise, to unsubscribe, use the following line: unsubscribe setiathome A digest version of the list is also available. Some possible topics of discussion include: * general experiences with the software. How long does is take your computer to analyze a chunk of data? Do different chunks take different amounts of time? * ways to optimize your system to improve the performance of the SETI@home software. * troubleshooting problems with the software. If you think you've found a problem with the software, discuss it with members of the list to see if it's a real problem with the software before contacting the SETI@home project, for example. * other discussion related to SETI@home. There are some topics that we request *not* be discussed here, since they are either not appropriate to the list or better just not argued at all. These include: * "I think my program found an alien signal!" No, it probably didn't (remember the advisory included with the software when you installed it?) Let the software do its work; the UC Berkeley folks who run the SETI@home program will be sure to follow up any potential "interesting" signals it comes across. * Operating system flame wars. Discussion of performance of SETI@home across many platforms has the potential to lead to heated arguments and flame wars about various operating systems. Those that believe OS X is better than OS Y are unlikely to be swayed by OS Y's arguments, and vice versa. Respect everyone's choice in operating systems, and work together to improve everyone's experience with SETI@home. * General discussions about SETI. SETI is a fascinating topic, full of interesting discussions about the possibility of alien intelligence somewhere out there. However, there are other lists devoted to general SETI discussions. Check out http://www.talkspace.net/mlists/setitalk.html for information on one such list. ** Caveats and Disclaimers *** This list and overall service is very much in a early beta-test stage; we plan to keep any service disruptions to a minimum but can't make any guarantees. This SETI@home mailing list and talkspace.net have no official connection with the SETI@home project. We just think it's a neat project and want to encourage discussion and interaction among participants. Questions about the list itself, technical problems, et cetera, can be emailed to Jeff Foust at jeff@klx.com
